One of the good things about being the UHI Lecturer in Whisky is having to take the students through tasting sessions, and my view is that I should always taste the malts first!
One of the new ones for next week is from the Gordon and MacPhail Distillery Label Collection, the Balblair 10 year old. Matured in refill sherry hoggies and first fill bourbon barrels, this malt is a wonderful balance of aromas and tastes.
Don’t let the very pale colour put you off, this is a malt of complexity and is a delight. The nose was fruity and estery, with vanilla and peach. A light body but lots of flavour followed; there was mango and peach, and a real sweetness. Although short the finish was very sweet.
This is a lovely dram on its own, my advice would be not to let water anywhere near it.
